Cannot find Astrolog32.dat
..
..
.. This is advice that something needs to be fixed.
- this page is to tell you what to check and then what to do.

(It's the job of the Config file is to tell the program where \miscellaneous, \charts, & \atlas & other folders are.)

Meanwhile, Astrolog32 will function, after a fashion, without access to the Atlases nor Swiss Ephemeris files - making charts with data you put in, within the limitation of only accessing the backup ephemeris; you can't call any interpretations nor atlas; nor is there a way of permanently altering the program's size and functioning - but you can save charts to the \charts folder, if you can find where it lurks.
Astrolog32 has an ultimate default location of Greenwich, UK, and that timezone, UT.
But the program is utterly handicapped: you must let it create an astrolog32.dat, or import one, ..and proceed from there (there may be more issues: later this page will try to answer queries about directory-paths if you get "Cannot find Ephemeris/American/..", and such..- see further on how to deal with this situation).

So I can recall three possible reasons why installers of Astrolog32 see this  - to narrow down:
Even where you actually have an astrolog32.dat, you may still get: "Cannot find ephemeris files", ..."cannot find states_list.atl" (i.e. the US atlas), and these will arise (especially with V1.3x and before), when you have browsed away from the default targets of Astrolog32 folders when installing; - astrolog32.dat clearly exists in such cases, but is not guiding the program aright ~ the ephemeris/atlas (or ..interpretations/miscellaneous) folders are not where it expects. This is covered further down in this doc.

------------------------------

If you have installed version 1.3x or before, default installations go to C:\Astrolog32

If you have installed version 2.0x, 'offered' installation paths go to C:\Program Files\Astrolog32

if you get 'Cannot find..' notifications, you must have steered it elsewhere in your file-system.
------------------------------

The fix may be quick, or a long chore, and so the first thing is to snoop the situation:
the A32 folders

NOTE: When saving, in the next field under 'filename', ('file as type'), keep the name as astrolog32.dat, by choosing "All files".

(NOTE: Older versions of Astrolog32 would generate new folders at C:\, and these arise when the program panics on not initially finding its internal folders.)
------------------------------

NEXT SNOOP:
Where you found the /main folder, were there also the other folders there?

If you found two folders in atlas, were they populated with any files? - in V2.02, at the very least there would be one file in each folder, both .atl files; many more in v2.05.

If you found ephemeris, was it populated with any files (at least three in v2.0x and after, all .se1 files? - there would be nothing in a new v1.3x install, and versions before).

------------------------------

Testing: Keep the Config.file open and now test, using the open program 'Astrolog32', or 'Windows Explorer' :

1. In Astrolog32's charting window, go [File] > [Save Mainchart data..]: \charts folder should appear; go 'up a folder'; there you should find, at the very least, \main, \ephemeris, \charts, \atlas folders.
(If \charts is not available, the Config.file must be editted.)

2. In 'Windows Explorer', go to your Astrolog32 folder, and find and open \main: change the 'file as type' field to 'All files': there should be the following visible:
seorbel.txt, four astrolog.ico's, astrolog32.dat, Helpfile.txt, history texts, watlas, and others.
3.Go 'up a folder':
Open '\atlas': open '\american': retain the 'file as type' field as 'All files'. If you have installed the atlases, Can you see over 60 *.atl files? Or, even just one or two .atl files?

4. Go up a folder:
Open '\international': retain the 'file as type' field as 'All files'. If you have installed the atlases, Can you see over 245 *.atl files? (you downloaded the lot!); or, even just two, or a few .atl files? (v2.0x - new install).

5. If you installed extra Swiss Ephemeris files, go 'up two folders';
double-click to open \ephemeris: are there just three *.se1 files? none? all you downloaded?

Close 'Windows Explorer'.

6. Finally, in Astrolog32's charting window, go [Edit] > [Edit Mainchart], and click 'Search Atlases' - do you get:
"file 'states.list.atl' not found in Directory 'C:\astrolog32\atlas\american'"? - or,
"file 'states.list.atl' not found in Directory 'C:\Program Files\astrolog32\atlas\american'"?
If so, close these dialogs: the folders are found where astrolog32.dat expects, but either: just 'states.list.atl' is missing which means Astrolog32 can't navigate, or more likely: the two folders are empty - the contents are mislaid.

CONCLUSIONS

If, in queries 2, 3, 4, & 5, there were no files, the folders are unpopulated, and you should look for another Astrolog32 folder in your file-system.

If the atlas files were installed, but can't be seen in either \atlas folder: - if there is no *.se1 files in ephemeris although you installed them, the Config.file is steering the program to the wrong places, or extended downloads have ended up wrongly placed: - it looks like there's other folders holding your files.

You have two routes:
(If you choose the second, find now the Astrolog32 (or other) folder(s) which ACTUALLY HAVE these files, and copy down the full address path of one file from each folder, into a notepad. (For the address-path, go 'right-click' on any file, & select 'Properties'...)

Now,
1. Either you shift the files to the folders where Astrolog32 expects them, or

2. Leave them, and correct the DIRECTORIES to finish the job, by inserting the full address path (to \charts, to \ephemeris, etc.), as edits in the Config.file's DIRECTORIES. See the 'Customizing Defaults in the Config.file', section of the Companion, in the last part called YOUR DIRECTORIES.

NOTE: If you shift the files to the folders where Astrolog32 expects them, and that includes the \main folder, then the desktop links that launch Astrolog32 will no longer work; find astrolog32.exe, in \main, and right-click on it to select "Create shortcut"; then copy/paste the shortcut to the desktop, and/or drag it to the Start button.

>>>>>>>> If all folders & essential files are present, and your astrolog32.dat steers the program to them, your Astrolog should work fine now. <<<<<<<<
